Emergency vs. Urgent Care: Do You Know The Difference?

In the event of a medical crisis, sometimes it's hard to determine if you should go to the emergency room or an urgent care center. However, it is important to know the difference between an emergency medical condition and urgent care so that you can maximize your health care benefits. You can help make emergency care as efficient and effective as possible by knowing how to distinguish emergency, urgency and/or routine health concerns.

Is it an Emergency?

If you have an emergency medical condition such a difficulty breathing, suspected heart attack, uncontrolled bleeding, unconsciousness or severe burns, try to use a contracted emergency room to maximize your benefits. While the ER can help care for any medical situation, it comes at a steep price. The ER costs an average of three times more than a visit to the urgent care. In a non-life threatening situation, you can most likely be treated at an urgent care.

If you have a situation that requires prompt medical attention but is not life-threatening, you may receive faster care if you visit an urgent care center or schedule a same-day appointment with your primary care physician. Visiting an urgent care center is a great alternative where you will be treated quickly while saving money. Most urgent care centers are open late and on weekends and holidays.

Urgent Care Centers can help you with common conditions such as moderate fever, colds, cough or flu, broken bones, bruises, abrasions and minor cuts, minor burns, eye, ear or skin infections, sprains or strains, urinary tract infections, respiratory infections, vomiting, diarrhea and many more...

If you have a medical condition such as diabetes, heart disease or asthma, your primary care physician can advise you about symptoms that may require emergency, urgent or routine care.
